Urban Quarries LLC Reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

An analysis from Fresh Coast Climate Solutions expects Urban Quarries LLC to reduce GHG emissions by 64%, avoiding 12,500 to 25,000 metric tons of CO₂e per year—equivalent to removing 3,000 to 6,000 gas-powered cars or saving 1.4 to 2.8 million gallons of gasoline annually.

  • Centrally Located Facility – Reduces travel time / transportation costs and emissions from landfill trips.
  • Energy-Efficient Processing – Fully electric equipment and processes displace the use of landfill's diesel fueled equipment as well as similar equipment used to mine virgin aggregate materials.
  • Local Aggregate Reuse – Lowers the need for virgin material extraction and transport.

Impact: Helps counties meet climate action goals and contributes to statewide GHG reduction targets

How Urban Quarries LLC Supports MMP Objectives

1. Increase Recycling & Landfill Diversion Rates

Urban Quarries LLC processes and recycles street sweeping debris, hydro-vac materials, catch basin sediment, and C&D excavating waste, diverting them from landfills to:

  • Preserve landfill space and reduce long-term disposal costs.
  • Prevent soil and water contamination
  • Support compliance with landfill diversion targets.

Initially, Urban Quarries LLC can help divert between 150,000 to 300,000 tons of landfilled waste annually

2. Develop Sustainable End Markets and Circular Economies

Expands Recycling & Beneficial Use of Materials

  • Hydrovac slurry → Process for aggregate recovery or soil remediation
  • Street sweeping debris & C&D waste → Repurposed into secondary aggregate materials for infrastructure construction

Supports Circular Economy & Economic Growth

  • Creates an alternative source for aggregate materials to serve existing, well-established markets.
  • Supports local recycling initiatives and job creation in materials recovery

3. Optimize Waste and Recycling Infrastructure

Urban Quarries LLC transforms waste into valuable resources:

  • Recycled Aggregates – Used in road and infrastructure construction.
  • Processed Fill Materials – Sustainable alternatives for excavation projects.

4. Support Local and Regional Planning

Transportation Cost Savings

Urban Quarries LLC’s Redford Township location near I-96, I-275, M-39, and US-24 provides logistical advantages, reducing:

  • Hauling distances and unloading times, cutting fuel and labor costs.
  • Highway congestion from heavy truck traffic, improving public safety.
  • Need for long-haul transport, easing road maintenance expenses.
  • Wear and tear on equipment, from moving in and out of the landfill.

Benefit: Counties save on fuel, labor, and maintenance costs, while lowering transportation-related emissions

Street Sweeping Improves Infrastructure Efficiency & Longevity

  • Lowers costs for maintaining stormwater & sewer systems
  • Prevents road and drainage system damage from unmanaged waste

Enhanced Environmental Compliance

Urban Quarries LLC helps counties:

  • Meet MS4 permit requirements by properly managing street sweeping debris and catch basin materials.
  • Reduce landfill dependency through sustainable recycling practices.
  • Demonstrate leadership in environmental sustainability.

5. Advance Education and Outreach

Brings Attention to Stormwater & Water Quality Management Best Practices

  • Street Sweeping prevents pollutants from entering waterways
  • Street Sweeping reduces sediment, heavy metals, and chemical contamination in stormwater systems
